A Letter from Nicole and Wayne

Spring has sprung and lots has happened since I last posted.

I'll be posting some of the book news I've noted over the last month or so soon.  But first, there's some exciting news on the Kids' Lit Quiz Australia front!

The 2015 competition has been announced! In the week of 5 March, there'll be 5 heats (in Ipswich, Brisbane, Orange, Canberra  and Sydney) before the Australian final is held on Saturday 14 March at the Monkey Baa Theatre, Darling Harbour in Sydney.  There's more information at 2015 Australian Quiz and FAQ: Kids' Lit Quiz Australia.

After the jump, there's a letter from the Australian coordinator, Nicole Deans and the quizmaster and founder of Kids' Lit Quiz International, Wayne Mills to teachers, librarians and teacher-librarians explaining how the Kids' Lit Quiz competition can build literacy in schools in a fun and exciting way.

Attention: School Librarian or Head of English

Welcome to the 2015 Australian heats of the International Kids’ Lit Quiz. This is a literary quiz which aims to broaden students’ knowledge and encourage a love of reading. It is open to students aged between 10 and 13 years.

The international success of the Kids’ Lit Quiz is supported by contemporary research. The quiz stimulates wide reading, improves vocabulary and content knowledge and importantly encourages students to read for pleasure.

Because we understand that selecting a team may take time, a pre-test is made available to you that may assist your school’s selection. The pre-test is intended to be given to a team rather than an individual. All you really need, however, is a group of four students who read widely. The team then works collaboratively during the quiz to answer 100 questions in ten categories. The categories are diverse in order to cater for all reading tastes. Book prizes are awarded and there are prizes for the winning team. The event lasts for three hours, with a twenty-minute break at the halfway point.

Known as ‘the sport of reading’ the Kids’ Lit Quiz encourages students to broaden their reading and creates an awareness of genre, authors and titles. The competition is designed to be huge fun, with an element of competition, personal challenge and reward that is seldom available to children whose passion is reading. Just taking part in one of the regional heats provides important experiences that many children may not otherwise have.

The World Final of the Quiz is held in July each year. The 2015 the World Final is being held in Connecticut, USA and we would like to offer this year’s winning team from Australia an invitation to attend this event in July.

We look forward to receiving your entry.

Please do not hesitate to contact Nicole Deans, the Australian Co-ordinator, at kidslitquizaustralia@gmail.com if you need any further information. The Kids’ Lit Quiz website is: www.kidslitquiz.com.

Good luck!

Nicole Deans & Wayne Mills MNZM
