The Boundless is essentially the story of a young boy named Will Everett who travels across Canada on the longest train in the world – over 900 cars long!
The train, which is driven by Will’s father, is full of a weird cast of characters including a Sasquatch, a mean shopkeeper, and a circus ringmaster with a knack for magic. The whole circus is on board, including a young female escape artist and Siamese stilt- walking twins.
When they were building the train track, Will was chosen to drive in the last spike, which was made of gold and jewels. During an avalanche, a track worker tries to steal the spike but is scared off by a young Sasquatch. At one point, Will witnesses a murder that takes place because of the spike, and when he is spotted, the chase begins. He has to make his way from the caboose to the front of the train to warn his father. There are close calls and fight scenes and magic pranks.
Once I opened The Boundless, I couldn’t put it down. I really like this book because it is very exciting and it combines fantasy with adventure. It’s a real page–turner, and Kenneth Oppel is one of my favourite Canadian authors.
