Book Review - Life on the Refrigerator Door

Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers (2007)

by Madeleine, 13, Cockermouth, UK

Written literally through notes on the refrigerator door, this is perhaps on of the saddest novels available to teens.

Clare is a typical teenager, constantly occupied with friends, schoolwork and her future.  Her mother, on the other hand is a full-time midwife, often working immense hours.  Both are so absorbed within their own activities that their one consistent source of communication consists of noted pinned to the refrigerator door.  However, when Clare's mother becomes chronically ill, Clare must decide between her loyalties to herself and her youth, and her mother's needs.
